Store Picks: Old Forester Single Barrel; Party Mart, Louisville KY

Pick Information - This offering was chosen by the barrel selection team at Party Mart in Louisville, Ky.  This barrel was picked in person at the Old Forester distillery. This pick 90 proof, around 6 years old, and was aged in Warehouse B on the 8th floor.

Color –  Bright gold.  Darker than you would imagine for age.

Nose – Lots of vanilla and cherry on the nose.  Very distinct. Also get some biscuit / baking dough.  The combination literally reminds of mixed berry jam on biscuits.

Palate –Very smooth, no burn.  Light to medium mouthfeel with heavy cherry and fruit flavors.  You get some of that vanilla from the nose as well as a hint of the oak.

Finish -  The finish was a little short but very smooth and refreshing. You get a lot of sweetness with the cherry coming through with some mint.

Wallet – Old Forester 90 proof is typically an under $20 bottle.  The Party Mart pick was $37.99. For me, the normal 90 proof offering is basic and typically well balanced which is what you expect from a blend.  The $15-$20 difference for this store pick, which has a unique flavor profile, is worth the extra spend.

Head to Head – Because the store pick has such a different flavor profile (which is usually why we like store picks), there is not really a head to head comparison.  I would say the store pick is a unique offering of the OF 90 proof and quite different from a flavor profile standpoint.

Bourbon Wes says –  Personally, I loved this store pick for what it is.  A very sweet, refreshing offering that is something different than what I typically experience with these.  If you love sweet bourbons or are looking for something lighter and unique for these hot summer evenings, stop by Party Mart in Louisville or have a proxy pick you up one.  Big fan.

Rating (tasting notes + price point + uniqueness) – I would rate this store pick a 7 out of 10.

Cheers!

9-10 -  Outstanding. Hunt for multiple bottles.  On par with allocated releases.
