Store Picks: Yankee Spirits Store Pick – Barrel 92
Pick Information - This offering was chosen by the barrel selection staff at Yankee Spirits in Norwood, MA. It is unknown if the store staff selected barrel 284 in person at Buffalo Trace or from samples supplied in their store from their distribution rep. This is a 10-year bourbon.
Color – Gold and glowing.
Nose – Stone fruit blended with mild oak. Second nosing brings out a hint of baking spice.
Palate – Slight oily mouthfeel. Behind a tamed heat (only 90 proof) you get a balance of oak and a thick sweetness, almost like a molasses. A second taste brings in some of the usual caramel notes with a hint of vanilla.
Finish - The finish is soft and short without any lingering notes. For some this would be considered a disappointing finish but there is something to be said about a bourbon with a pleasant, subtle finish. Not all bourbons can be balls to wall octane.
Wallet – Eagle Rare store pics rarely break the wallet and at $32.99 it is a no brainer for a 10- year bourbon from Buffalo Trace.
Head to Head - In a head to head comparison to standard Eagle Rare, I actually find two to be comparable. The one flavor that is a standout on the Yankee pick versus the standard offering is the molasses. If you like that molasses note in your bourbon, then try barrel #92.
Bourbon Wes says - If you live in the Norwood, MA area or know someone who does and can serve as a proxy, stay on the lookout for future barrel selections and stop by one of their stores and pick up a couple of bottles.
Cheers!
